Olympics May Be The Reason (Ha!) For Today’s Twitter Outage

without comments

reason

Twitter’s having problems today! Oh, what’s that, you knew already? Well fine then. But we’ve just gotten our hands on some additional data related to today’s outage courtesy of application monitoring platform Compuware APM. The company pulled measurements from its backbone data centers, Last Mile network (actual end users) and mobile devices, and has basically documented the problem by examining response times across these sources.

We’re told that the current speculation is that the Twitter outage may have to do with the increased activity due to Olympics-related traffic.

The Olympics are expected to bring an unprecedented surge of activity by sports fans on social networking sites, the company tells us, and some sluggishness had already been reported. Compuware says it’s now diving into the data further to determine whether or not the outage had anything to do with the increased Olympics traffic, or if that was merely a coincidence.

For those who missed it (i.e., people with a life), Twitter experienced an extended outage today beginning around 11:23 AM ET, according to reports from performance monitoring company Apica. The service briefly recovered at 12:04 PM, then crashed again at 12:15 PM. At 12:58 PM, Twitter started delivering server-side error codes. One of those was the pretty hilarious one you see above. For whatever reason (groan), the message handing function there didn’t fill in what the reason was, leaving users scratching their heads.

Winter Sports Fans Like to Check In, Are Marketers Paying Attention?

without comments

As marketers we often have to pay attention to areas of life that we ourselves have no interest in. Many people get turned off when we talk about sports but guess what? Whether you, as a marketer, watch or not is COMPLETELY irrelevant. If your market is there you better be there as well no matter what your personal peccadilloes.

Why am I bringing this up? Well, many marketers are just beginning to understand the power of getting in front of the sports fan while they are at the event or anywhere for that matter. Sports fans, it turns out, aren’t all beer chugging galoots (how the heck to you really spell that anyway?). In fact they are, gulp, social media savvy! This goes WAY beyond beer advertising and Cialis as well. Check out this poll from Coyle Media and see which winter sport attracts real social media users.

Social Sports Poll - Check-ins

Sports Marketing from Coyle Media, LLC.

Sports marketing often gets pigeon-holed as the domain of beer and all things low brow but that couldn’t be further from reality especially when marketers understand just how many Internet savvy fans are spending a lot of time and money around sports.

Are you paying enough attention to this segment? Could you be thinking outside the box to reach untapped markets for your products and services?

Infographic: Google Goes Wild With Android Market Stats

without comments

android-market-stats

Google’s been celebrating their recent Android Market milestone with a string of discounted (and awesome) apps, but really — what’s a celebration without an infographic? Thankfully, Google has come through on that front with a slew of stats about the Android Market and the people who use it.

For example, despite Android being the most widely used smartphone OS in the United States, Americans are actually only the fourth most active app downloaders in the world. South Korea takes the top spot in this category, with Hong Kong and Taiwan coming in second and third respectively.

What’s more, the most popular time to download apps is 9PM on a Sunday, which certainly makes sense to me. After all, what better way to get pumped for a new week than to find apps that help kill time at work? Google also confirms that games are the most downloaded apps, although Android users don’t seem to be particularly big sports fans.

There’s a lot more to dig into, so take a few seconds and peruse — you know you’re dying to find out how many keystrokes people have collectively saved using SwiftKey.
